Big week on campus, Part 2 (better late than never)

Filed under: Life @ Olin, Events @ Olin, Photos — Allison Bahme @ 11:51 pm

So my eyes are STILL broken, but I shall forge on…

Now, where was I? Oh yes…

Last Thursday brought the Ignite Clean Energy (ICE) Competition. While I was in no way involved in the activities, it seemed pretty cool that we were able to host the semifinals at Olin AND we even had a participating team! The idea behind the ICE is to build the clean energy business cluster in Massachusetts (and regionally) by working with entrepreneurs to crystallize their business concepts and helping them produce a compelling ten-minute investor pitch. By getting entrepreneurs in front of investors and others in the sector, the ten finalists got some great exposure.

The highlight of the day for me, however, was Trivia Night - sponsored by the Class of 2007. It was emceed by Chris Morse (our Chemistry prof and resident QuizMaster) and scored by Adam “Joe” College ’07 (who was banned from playing because he could beat every team there by himself!)

trivia11.JPG Professor Rebecca Christianson, David ’07 and Jeff ‘07 chat prior to the evening’s trivia smackdown.

There were about 10 teams, several of which included faculty and staff members.

carolkelley.jpg Apparently Carol Kelley, Assistant to the Dean of Student Life, didn’t want me to take her picture.

trivia3.jpg Chris Morse distributes the answer sheets, while Alison Black, Assistant Dean of Student Life, discusses strategies(?!) with teammates Alison ’07 and Tiana ’08. And yes, they are wearing boas!

So my team, Four Eyez – Katherine ’10, Ellen ’10, Jon ’08, Teresa Kelleher from the Admission Office and me - held our own through 5 rounds… despite being down one person for the first and last rounds! In between the question rounds, Lindsay ’07 lead some fun games for extra prizes (most donated by Class of 2007 parents… yes, our parents rock too!). (more…)

Big week on campus, Part 1

Filed under: Life @ Olin, Events @ Olin, Photos — Allison Bahme @ 1:14 pm

There’s been a lot happening at Olin this week! Upon my return from a tiny trip home to Texas, I jumped right back into the thick of things… beginning with our largest information session EVER at Olin!

InfoSession This is a pic of our welcome board - it doesn’t begin to illustrate how big the group was! But, alas, we forgot to get a picture of the auditorium… oops.

I don’t have an exact headcount but my best guesstimation was about 60 people listened to my “song and dance” in the auditorium that day. Wow… we’ve come a long way since the days of 1-2 families chatting in our lobby!

Next was an Ecumenical Passover Sedar on Tuesday evening. The Sedar was open to the entire Olin community, so it was a really cool mix of people and faiths. For some of us, it was a great (comforting?) way to celebrate Passover when we’re far away from family; for others, it was an opportunity to learn/try something new with a group of friends.

Sedar Our Ecumenical Sedar in the East Hall Lounge. Lots of people spent many hours (Bonnie ‘09, Ben ‘10, Karen ‘06 and Professor Lynn Stein to name a few) organizing and COOKING this delicious homemade meal for the Sedar. Photo courtesty of Yifan ‘10

Sadly, some folks had to jet off early to prepare for the next item on the agenda: ExpressO Black. As Ellen and Jessi mentioned in their blogs, it’s an “uncensored” version of our variety show known more commonly known as simply ExpressO (some of you saw a sampling at Candidates’ Weekend). Because of its racier/edgier content, this one’s mainly for the current students but I was dying to check it out! So I hung out with some first-years in the mezzanine to get a birds-eye view. There were a variety of acts – some exactly what I would have expected (bawdy, raunchy, funny) but others were truly clever and amazing displays of talent, including a powerful monologue by Keoni ’07.

Wednesday brought Big Conversations, a day when classes are cancelled and our community takes time to ponder the world beyond the “Olin bubble.” Amy Smith, an inventor and instructor at MIT, was a terrific addition to Olin’s Speaker Series on “What’s Important?” Professor Smith is dedicated to developing technologies that optimize limited resources and solve seemingly intractable problems in developing countries; she and her students are making a difference in the lives of thousands of people all over the world with their inventions.

Big Conversations Amy Smith sharing one of her favorite quotes (and guiding principles of her life) with the Olin community during Big Conversations.

I must admit that it was a pretty amazing and inspirational presentation! Afterward we had several options including a series of short films, continued discussions over lunch (free and sponsored by our Office of Innovation and Research!) and a variety of activities related to appropriate technologies, social entrepreneurship and community service.

So, my eyes are broken and I must stop staring at this computer screen. Thursday and Friday (aka Part 2) will arrive soon…

Pretty much all I have to say about CW is… WOW!

Filed under: Admission Info, Events @ Olin, Photos — Allison Bahme @ 10:23 pm

So it’s been something like a month since I’ve darkened the blogging doorway… Apologies, but well… there are only so many things a girl can do in the name of Olin College! But I’ll try to make up for it now…
I am still recovering from Candidates’ Weekends! Yes, still recovering. I was kind of hoping for a really long vacation in some far away place, but alas my friends, there is still work do. BUT I think I can safely say that the 2007 Candidates’ Weekends were a great success… at least that’s what everyone keeps telling me! ;-)

Actually, thanks for the feedback. I know it seemed like we threw a lot at you over the weekend (well, we did) but it’s great to see that so many of you took to heart the Olin ideal of constant improvement and threw your ideas/suggestions/comments back at us. We really appreciate it. I also want to thank ALL of you for joining the Olin community for a couple days - it was an honor to have you (and your families) on our campus. Seriously. Although you were invited to Candidates’ Weekends and, yes, it is a requirement for admission, you could have decided that a trip to Olin wasn’t worth the time or money or… whatever. But 178 of you did take that chance - you did take time off from school or away from outside activities, traveled to campus (whether it was from down the street or from halfway around the world) and, hopefully, got a better sense of what Olin is all about. And whether we made a good impression or not, you at least got to know us a bit better… and we got to know you a bit better too! Although I didn’t get to meet everyone during the weekends, I truly enjoyed my time spent with you and your families! It was also great to finally put happy, smiling faces with all the applications and emails and IM’s and…. :-D

Some highlights included:

  • Candidates telling “bad” jokes between sessions in the auditorium
  • Some impressive ideas/creations in the “No, you are not being evaluated” Design Build exercise
  • The most amazing Poi shows EVER (fire spinning, dancing, juggling, tossing and more)
  • A glimpse of our “quirky” and talented students at the Variety Show
  • Impromptu unicycling lessons on the “O”
  • The 1.25 story K’nex calculator at the Mini Expo (yes, this is proof that I have a nerdy side)
  • knex2.jpg photo courtesy of Maia ‘10

  • An opportunity to see our fine thespians in action at FWOP’s presentation of The Importance of Being Earnest
  • The “Risotto Incident” - I am not too proud to say that it was perhaps the most unprofessional moment of my illustrious career

And of course, great food and scintillating conversation around every corner! Oh and before I forget… (more…)

Attack (not really) of the Wall Walkers… and small children!

Filed under: Life @ Olin, Events @ Olin, Photos — Allison Bahme @ 11:03 pm

Today, the Olin community was a bit larger than normal when 70 4th grade students from Hillside Elementary School in Needham became “Guest Judges” for our Design Nature class (that’s the first-year design component of ICB, our Integrated Course Block, and students use nature as the inspiration/guide for their design projects).
The Design Nature students showed off their toy prototypes this morning in the first floor hallway of the Academic Center. The Olin students were challenged to develop bio-inspired wall walkers for elementary-aged children; the cool part was that the Hillside 4th graders got to evaluate the toys and experience a little bit of Olin!

It was *so* much fun! I almost felt like a kid again! As I wandered back and forth along the AC first floor, it was amazing to see how engaged and excited the Hillside students were - they took their assignments very seriously as they carried their clipboards and moved from team to team, asking questions and rating each design on an evaluation sheet. Rather than just doing a standard presentation, this was a great way for the Design Nature students to explain their designs and see if they appealed/made sense to their target audience.

And now… the requisite pictures! And yes, the team names are rather, er, creative…

What do tickets to a Red Sox-Yankees game have to do with community service?!?

Filed under: Life @ Olin, Events @ Olin, FYI, Photos — Allison Bahme @ 2:37 pm

A lot actually!

On December 1st, the Olin community descended upon our Dining Hall with cash and checkbooks in hand for the annual SERV (Support, Encourage, and Recognize Volunteerism) Auction. SERV is the umbrella organization for community service at Olin and, each year, it organizes a auction on campus to raise money for various charitable organizations. This year was the most successful SERV Auction yet (we raised $6,805) and all proceeds were donated to two organizations: half to the Chernobyl Children’s Project and half to Partners in Health.

The event is actually two auctions, one is silent and the other is live. There was a dizzying array of goods and services donated for the auction, from Baked-Goods-of-the-Month to rides to the airport and “Story Time” with Montana Mike (’10) to organizing your home/office/dorm room. And yes, one of the donated items was a pair of tickets to the opening series of the Red Sox and Yankees next April (courtesy of Visiting Asst. Professor of Chemistry Chris Morse). Members of the Office of Student Life and Asst. Professor of Mechanical Engineering Jessica Townsend got in a bidding war…

osl2.jpg jessica-soxtix.jpg Note how Prof. Townsend (pictured at right) is staring down her competition!

The tix sold (eventually!) to Jessica for over $200.

Another fun bid was for 75 hours of MANual labor (courtesy of some upperclassmen guys in East Hall):

manhall-manuallabor2.jpg Affectionately known as the “Man Hall,” these guys not only donated themselves to the auction, they were quite the bidders as well!

Speaking of, those guys were involved in the HIGHEST BIDDING WAR of the day - Movie Night, sponsored by a large group of Olin faculty. From the Live Auction Descriptions:

Movie Night
The Olin Faculty (Rob Martello)
No starting bid
A group of Olin faculty want to watch a movie with you. The winning bidder gets to plan the venue, and the higher the bid, the greater the fun.
The high bidder or bidding team receives the rare, status-filled opportunity to plan and experience a movie night with the faculty! You pick the invitee list (all of Olin? Your suite? Your class? We say, more the merrier!). You pick the Olin location (the residence hall? The auditorium?). You pick several possible dates and times. And you pick the movie (or substitute something else such as a sporting event, TV show, etc.). Note that the faculty retain veto power over all choices, but are looking to have fun with this. Will this be a sci-fi event? Sports? Comedy?
Faculty members who plan to attend, pending scheduling constraints, include Brian B, Debbie C, Mark C, Steve H, Caitrin L, Rob M, Chris M, Oscar M, Joanne P, Mark S, Sarah S, Jon S (if in spring), Zhenya Z., Diana D. and Alisha S. Other faculty will attempt to join the fun once a date and time are set.
If the high bidder exceeds $50.00 the faculty will present a signed “certificate of exceptional and meritorious
excellence” to the winning bidder (or bidding team)!
If the high bidder exceeds $65.00 the faculty will also compose and deliver an ode to honor the winning bidder or bidders!
If the high bidder exceeds $80.00 the faculty will also bring several short features, trailers, etc, to simulate a true theater experience!
If the high bidder exceeds $100.00 the faculty will also bring snacks and treats!
If the high bidder exceeds $125.00 the faculty will also do something fun and/or zany prior to the show!
The excitement doesn’t stop there. Faculty will consider other customizable aspects to this event for every $25 increment above $125 (or will expand the bonus features listed above), and we will take requests.

manhall-deliberations1.jpg The upperclassmen watch as the bids rise… $200… $300…

frosh-deliberations.jpg First-years contemplate their next move, as senior Molly pushes the bidding to $500…

manhall-deliberations3.jpg The guys (literally) put their heads together to figure out how high they can go…

The winning bid was $525!! Now what I’m wondering is what “fun and/or zany” requests the faculty will take since the bidding went so high!

Some other photos…

johnlaughing.jpg Prof. John Geddes chuckling after he made a bid on a donation by Bennett (’09)

dsoo-prxyalison.jpg Study Away Coordinator and Hall Director David Soo bidding by proxy for Alison Black, Asst. Dean of Student Life (she was busy helping to run the auction)

students.jpg Nikki ‘10, Brian ‘10, Herbert ‘09 and Ike ‘09 take in all the action

roland.jpg Roland ‘10 looks quite pleased from his birds-eye view from the balcony

Faculty and students at lunch Alex ‘10, Assoc. Professor Brian Storey, Professor Gil Pratt, Asst. Professor Mark Chang, Visiting Professor Dave Miller and Jo ‘07 enjoy lunch during the auction.

I definitely think a good time was had by all! I’m already thinking of ideas for my donations to next year’s auction… I’m open for suggestions!

Take care and let me know what’s on your mind!

In the news…

Filed under: FYI, Photos — Allison Bahme @ 12:54 pm

On my way into work today, I heard Seahorse Power mentioned in a little blurb on NPR (yes, again, I am a big nerd and I listen to public radio on a regular basis).

“Who or what is Seahorse Power,” you ask?!? It is a very cool local company that one of our alumni works for - his name is Jeff Satwicz and he is a mechanical engineer. He and another Olin student started working on a solar-powered trash compacter with 2 Babson MBA students in their sophomore year; that idea became the “Big Belly” which can be found in several cities in the US and Canada!! I even went out and took pics of one near Copley Square right here in Boston!

Big Belly 1 Big Belly 2 Not my finest photographic moment, but you get the idea

So back to the radio broadcast - it was that Seahorse had been named to Inc.com’s The Green 50 list, “a collection of entrepreneurial companies that are showing what it means to run good businesses, attack the most pressing problems of our time–and make serious cash along the way.” Click here to see the press release from Seahorse Power.

On that note, here’s the dirt on Jeff and a few other alumni:

Jeff Satwicz Jeff Satwicz is a mechanical engineer at Seahorse Power Company, and has led successful efforts to reduce manufacturing costs and improve product performance. He brings experience in product testing for Department of Defense projects on remote vehicles. He spent September 2001 to May 2002 as an Olin Partner at the Franklin W. Olin School of Engineering, helping professors design and test curriculum for Olin College. In addition to rigorous study in math, science, and engineering, the innovative curriculum emphasizes hands-on projects, teamwork, entrepreneurship, and the arts and humanities. Jeff has been working with SPC since May of 2003.

Drew Drew Harry - “Over the summer, I worked with another alumnus (Jon Chambers, my freshman year roommate) to create Thinkature, a visual workspace and communication application on the web. We launched on November 1st at http://www.thinkature.com and have attracted a lot of positive attention. In September, I started as a first year Masters student at the MIT Media Lab; I work in the Sociable Media group. My current project is to develop new ways of expressing online identities through visualization of past online activities.”

Joelle Joelle Arnold - “Less than a month after graduation I joined DfR Solutions, an electronics reliability and failure analysis start-up in the Metro DC area. Being employee number 9 has been as great as I ever hoped. Some tasks are familiar: grinding and polishing, microscopy, mechanical testing, writing reports, giving presentations. But I’ve gotten to grow as well: meeting with clients, managing interns, designing investigations, planning and manning an expo booth and even a little bit of product development. Now that I think about it, I got a taste of all those things at Olin, only now I do them all the time. My job features a variety of projects and roles, and it’s the flexibility and diversity of my work that I love about being at a start-up. While yesterday I was supervising vibration testing of a mounted circuit board, today I’m assembling a thermal cycling setup to test solder joints and tomorrow I may be cross sectioning capacitors in search of defects.
I’ll be starting my graduate course work this spring at the University of Maryland - College Park, courtesy of my employer. And if you’re interested, we’re looking to hire employees 12, 13 and 14…”

For a list of what the Class of 2006 is doing these days, you can take a look at the Post Graduate Planning website or just click here.

Back to work,

GUEST BLOG: The *biggest* Fall Open House EVER!

Filed under: Events @ Olin, Photos — Guest Blogger @ 8:14 pm

Hello all, it’s me, Emma again. I’m back to tell you about our recent Fall Open House. It was crazy! We had 400 guests on campus including prospective students, their parents, siblings and other relatives, and a group of administrators from a school in China. 400 people is a lot – a third more than our student body. (you can tell I’m an engineer - I look at numbers.) The funny thing, though, about these numbers is that we only have 299 seats in our auditorium, plus 50 additional chairs in the viewing area up top. That meant that the Open House was standing-room only! Most definitely a first at Olin College. Here, take a look at our auditorium as packed as we can possibly make it (without disobeying fire codes!):

Big Crowd!

Isn’t that just a little bit crazy? I’d never seen it like that in any case… Okay, so here are some more pictures of the day to explain things better than I ever could. A picture’s worth a thousand words, right?

Registration

Okay, we’re off to a good start. The obligatory picture of myself. This time really staged because although I’m here “working” registration, that wasn’t actually my job that day. But hey, if I’m going to be an actress, I’d better get used to “staged” presence, right?

Registration from above

Here you can see the real registration people – Teresa Kelleher, Admission Service Coordinator, and Sara ’07. The day started off with guests checking in and getting a packet full of information about Olin. While waiting for the program to start, they could talk to staff and students or take a campus tour.

Campus Tour

This is a picture of Alex ’07 and Ash ’09 starting off their tour outside the Olin Center. As you can see, it was a gorgeous day, but super windy!

Guests from China

Here are the Chinese administrators who were visiting during the day. They were guests of Rick Miller, Olin’s president, but they got to see more of what Olin is really like by participating in the Fall Open House.

OVAL

The Olin Volunteer Ambassador League (OVAL) was out in full force during the Open House. They were talking to our guests, guiding people to where they needed to go, leading tours, and just generally being very helpful. They could be recognized by their grey jackets and fancy OVAL nametags. Thank you to all of them!

Prez. Rick Miller

Here’s Olin’s President – Rick Miller. He and Robin ’07 (President of CORe) helped open the program by sharing some of their perspectives and experiences with our guests.

Presentations

The day had a few sessions in the auditorium. This one is going over Olin’s innovative curriculum. Professor Gill Pratt gave a brief overview (including a video of students drilling pumpkins on Halloween!) and three students (Joe ’10, Andrew ’09 and Tiana ’08) supplemented with explanations of some of the projects they have done in their classes at Olin. Other presentations during the day included one on our SCOPE Projects (Senior COnsulting Program for Engineering), an overview of Admission and Financial Aid and a student-made video about Olin called “Leading the Way.”

Alumni1 Alumni2

The highlight for most people during the day’s events was an open hour and a half where students could drop in to talk to either faculty, alumni (pictured here – Ann Marie Rynning, Steven Krumholz, and Cheryl Inouye), the Diversity Committee or representatives from the Office of Student Life. Snacks were of course provided! (and the leftovers are now the official munchie-busters in the Admission Office)

There was also a performance from Olin’s Conductorless Orchestra. These are pictures of some of our talented musicians:

OCO1 OCO2

OCO3 OCO4

And to end this blog entry, a picture of Kat ’07… :-P

Kat!

Thank you all, and maybe I’ll be back again, one day…

Although I usually mention that little anecdote in information sessions when I show the above picture, I was beginning to wonder if the younger Oliners would carry on the tradition. I am happy to say YES!! Check out the little Halloween “prank” below:

So, like I mentioned last time, we just had Family Weekend. Here are few pics from various events that weekend…

Autumn leaves @ Olin Soooo, contrary to popular belief… Olin has trees, pretty pretty trees!

Family Weekend Welcome! Welcome

Dinner @ Family Weekend Dinnertime - the scalloped potatoes, butternut squash soup and apple pie were my favorite dishes of the evening! And I was adopted by Tiana’s mom (c/o 2008) for the evening.

Full house at FWOP I volunteered (really!) to help usher on Opening Night for the Franklin W. Olin Players (FWOP) presentation of “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare - Abridged”. It was practically a full house in the Auditorium.

FWOP - Prez Rick Miller on stage! So audience participation is key to “CoWoWSA” - Ben ‘09 and Andrew ‘07 recruited President Rick Miller (the guy in the tie) to join them on stage as Ophelia’s Ego

FWOP - Ben's mom as Ophelia Ben’s mom “volunteered” (read: dragged from the audience) to be Ophelia… she did a great job!

FWOP - Id, Ego & Superego More audience participation - the first few rows became Ophelia’s Id - “Maybe… Maybe not… Maybe… Maybe not…”

So for me, the awesomest part of the weekend was when the Olin Soccer Team won its first game. This is our second club team (Ultimate Frisbee was the first) and we play in the Boston Ski & Sports Club rec league. We beat the Red Squirrels with a score of 2 to 0. (I’m also a little sad and jealous because I really wanted to play on the team, but alas, I’m traveling a bit too much to make that work… sigh… maybe in the spring.)

Olin Soccer - Prof/Coach John Geddes Professor John Geddes acted as coach for the day (Asst. Dean of Student Life, Nick Tatar, usually coaches but he was busy… his wife gave birth to their first child last week!)
