Chats! Spring! Visit!

Filed under: Life @ Olin, Events @ Olin, Emily — Emily Moscol @ 9:30 am

Hi!! I am a little bit tired this morning, mostly because I was up late last night making sure that the student-led chats were working correctly. The chat went for 2 hours (!) and I don’t think that any question went unanswered. Our moderators this week were Erik Kennedy and Jennifer Keene, both Class of 2010, and they discussed Student Life at Olin. We will have the transcript of the chat up early next week, so if you missed it you can catch up. You can read the transcript of last week’s chat on the admitted student site with Alyssa Levitz and Kaelyn Stadtmueller, Class of 2011. The theme of that chat was ICB and First Year courses. Next Thursday, April 24th at 10 pm (I know, Lost is back, but you can TiVo Lost, right? And then watch it in slow-motion to catch even the slightest clue fast forward the commercials?), the moderators will be Michael Ducker (’09) and Nikki Lee (’10). I urge everyone who has been admitted to use this resource to your advantage. No one knows Olin like the students, and they are an invaluable source of information.

That being said, Spring is finally (and hopefully firmly) here! It has been so nice out lately, and everyone has been trying to get outdoors as much as possible. I have seen several classes held outside, with the Academic Center windows doubling as dry-erase boards! When Spring comes to New England after a long and cold winter, the good weather seems like a reward for making it through. Plus, the campus is being prepared for Commencement, so everything looks beautiful. It’s a great time to come and visit, so if you haven’t yet, try and make it.

See you soon!!

Babson vs. Olin Iron Chef Competition!

Filed under: Life @ Olin, Photos — OlinAdmission @ 1:20 pm

On Monday evening, an epic culinary battle went down at Babson’s Trim Dining Hall. The teams had one hour to create an appetizer and a main dish for the judges. The teams were judged on cleanliness of work stations, teamwork, plate presentation, and of course, taste. Many members of the Olin community showed up to cheer on our team, which consisted of George (’10), Jen (’10), Connor (’08), Rachel (’11), Steve (’09) and Jeff (’08). The team was supervised and assisted by Lam, one of our fabulous cooks from the Olin dining hall, and advised by Shane Caledonia, the Executive Chef at Olin. Olin won by a margin of five points, and we now have a beautiful trophy displayed in the Dining Hall. Below are some pictures from the event- enjoy!

Application Processing Elves

Filed under: Life @ Olin, Caitlin — Caitlin Snow @ 3:13 pm

I’m not sure how many of you are obsessively checking your status page to see if/when we have received your application materials, but rest assured, we are working very hard to get everything into the system. Our office consists of four staff members, plus Charlie our Dean, and it takes a lot of manpower to open, process and file all that mail. We are fueled primarily by coffee and tasty holiday treats that have enough sugar to take down a small pony.

So-do not despair if the affidavit you put in the mail on Saturday or Monday hasn’t appeared in the “Done” category on your status page. It will get there! The same goes for test scores- your application will not suffer if everything in your file is not complete this week, next week, or even the week after that. Rest assured that the processing elves (that’s us, minus the pointy ears) will get everything done, hopefully before Christmas, at which time we will convert to Application Reading Elves. Thanks for your patience everyone, and thanks for working so hard to get your application into our hands.

Fall: Coming and Going

Filed under: Life @ Olin, Events @ Olin, Emily — Emily Moscol @ 10:49 am

Hello!

Our annual Fall Open House was held on October 28th, and it was a resounding success. We had nearly 350 people come to campus to learn more about Olin College, take tours, chat with faculty, and listen to the Olin Conductorless Orchestra. It was truly a whirlwind day for us. Overall, the survey responses have been very positive, and people are already asking about next year!!!

Before we can start planning another Fall Open House, we have a couple of things to get done first. Namely, admitting the class of 2012!! Things are heating up in the Admission office, with mail coming from all over the world. All of the materials I have seen so far indicate that our winter months are going to be filled to the brim with reading, reading, and more reading. I’m very excited, because this is my first admission cycle as an admission officer, so while I have been told what to expect, I have never experienced it first hand myself. I love new challenges, and this one looks to be quite amazing.

Whenever I see the year 2012 written, I think about when I was a kid and everyone talked about what the new millenium would be like. Flying cars, interplanetary travel, and cities in space. My dad was really into Star Trek, and we would watch Next Generation with him every week. I always imagined my grown up life to be a lot like the life on the starship Enterprise. I would be friends with other species and we would communicate telepathically. I had it all planned out. Except for the part where these things hadn’t actually been invented or discovered yet. Now, the only other species I’ve befriended are my cats, Saturn is my car, and I live an Earthly life in a regular house on a regular street. Oh well. Maybe someone whose application I’m reading now will be the one to get us into space, flying cars, or discover a new species. You never know. In the meantime, perhaps I should just take Captain Picard’s advice: “Live now; make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again.”

Ciao!

Emily

Autumn at Olin

Filed under: Life @ Olin, Caitlin — Caitlin Snow @ 8:24 am

It’s getting on towards November, which means that a) Olin students are passing around a NASTY cold b) mid-semester projects and midterms are coming due and c) it’s 70 degrees outside. The first two make sense, and there may actually be a cause and effect relationship going on there. Letter C is throwing me for a loop. The leaves have turned beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow, and many of them are starting to fall to the ground. The sun is going down earlier and earlier each day and yet…. most of the students I saw yesterday were wearing shorts and flip-flops. This makes Halloween costume-planning difficult because to me, it feels like August, and as everyone knows, Halloween is not an August holiday. Still, I feel the need to come up with SOMETHING because the Faculty and Staff Costume Competition is happening next Wednesday in the Dining Hall. Hopefully inspiration will strike in the next few days.

Since November is rapidly approaching, that means that there is roughly one month left before our application deadline! We have some work to do on our end as well. We have to process all the pieces of paper that come in the mail each day, all those recommendations and transcripts and test score reports that you’ve been sending us. We also have to go through application reader training, form reading teams, and then train those teams. We’re excited to start reading your applications, so make sure to submit your materials as soon as they’re ready!

BRRRRILLIANT!!!

Filed under: Life @ Olin, Allison — Allison Bahme @ 10:37 pm

So there’s a rumor amongst some students that the Admission Office is a “fishbowl” (the floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto the “O” may have something to do with that!)… and upon my return from lunch yesterday, I walked into a scene right out of The Little Mermaid…

Spring has sprung!

Filed under: Life @ Olin, Photos — Allison Bahme @ 8:04 pm

I can’t believe it… Spring has finally sprung in Boston! So what if it’ll be in the 50’s again later this week?!? The past 3 days have been gorgeous and everyone has been trying to spend as much time as possible outside.

Example #1: ICB Lecture

So Profs John Geddes and Mark Somerville decided – rightfully so! - that ICB (Integrated Course Block) lecture should be held outside on Friday. Who needs a lecture hall when you’ve got “portable” white boards, a window and a dry-erase marker? (photos courtesy of Angela ‘09)
